Hillary Clinton responded to fierce criticism of her remarks
last night, in which she said half of Donald Trump’s supporters belong in a
“basket of deplorables,” by issuing a written apology,Uma Pemmaraju reported on America's Election HQ.
She had categorized many supporters of the New York Republican
as “racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic and Islamophoboic,” at a fundraising
event in New York, hosted by an LGBT group.
Saturday afternoon, Clinton released a statement, Bryan Llenas reported, which read in part:
Last
night, I was ‘grossly generalistic’ and that’s never a good idea.
I
regret saying ‘half’ – that was wrong.
But
let’s be clear.
What’s
really ‘deplorable’ is that Donald Trump hired a major advocate for the
so-called ‘alt-right’ movement to run his campaign, and that David Duke and
other white supremacists see him as a champion of their values.
I won’t
stop calling out bigotry and racist rhetoric in this campaign…
As I said, many of Trump’s supporters are hard-working Americans
who just don’t feel like the economy or our political system are working for
them.”
Trump’s campaign manager Kellyanne Conway demanded an apology
from Clinton after hearing about her remarks.
Vice Presidential candidate Mike Pence said her comment was one
of the worst by a candidate he has heard since then-Sen. Barack Obama referred
to Pennsylvanians and Midwesterners as "clinging to their guns or religion."
