Surprising: George H.W. Bush sidestepping the Republican
Party and voting for Hillary Clinton in November? According to the
Kennedys: Yes.
Politico reported that on Monday Kathleen Hartington Kennedy
Townsend, daughter of the late Robert F. Kennedy, posted a picture to Facebook
of her and Bush Sr. with the caption, “The President told me he’s voting for
Hillary.
Politico
stated that they reached out to the Kennedy family member via phone and
she confirmed “that’s what he said” when she met with him in
Maine earlier on Monday. They also reached out to the former President’s
spokesman to see if he would confirm Bush’s preference for the 2016 election.
The
vote President Bush will cast as a private citizen in some 50 days will be just
that: a private vote cast in some 50 days,” Jim McGrath replied to Politico in
an email. “He is not commenting on the presidential race in the interim.”
However, in May of this year, McGrath told the Texas Tribune that
“At age 91, President Bush is retired from politics,” and that he “came out of
retirement to do a few things for Jeb, but those were the exceptions that
proved the rule.”
Also adding that Bush 41’s son,
former President George W. Bush “does not plan to participate in or comment on
the presidential campaign.
Jeb
Bush, Bush 41’s other son who ran for President in the 2016 election, has been
outspoken about his plans to not endorse Donald Trump but has never alluded to
the fact he would vote for Hillary Clinton.
According to The Washington Post,
George H.W. Bush would be the first President since 1948 to buck his political
party in an election.
