Participants at a
conference in Texas, USA, have insisted that a Biafra referendum be held to
determine the people's willingness to continue being a part of Nigeria.
According to a
communique issued at the end of the meeting in Houston, the groups unanimously
agreed that mechanisms and strategies be put in place to achieve the
referendum.
"That referendum
is the ultimate solution to the agitation and unrest in the southern part of
Nigeria, to be conducted peacefully without loss of life or destruction of
property," read the communique signed by J.O.S Okeke and Chiwuikem
Ihediwa.
The groups also
demanded that the Nigerian government release "without delay" the
leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, who is still in
detention over his involvement and agitation for self-determination.
Those at the
conference included representatives of the Supreme Council of Elders of
Indigenous People of Biafra; Biafra Government in Exile; Igboezue Cultural
Advancement Association Worldwide; and Igbo Peoples Congress, Houston.
